HTC jumps on record sales but overhang seen remaining

HTC jumps on record sales but overhang seen remaining

TAIPEI (Reuters) - Shares in the world's No.5 handset maker HTC jumped on Monday after it posted record monthly sales in June, clearing some of the worries that led to a correction starting early last month.
HTC was up 4 percent by 0250 GMT, outperforming the broader market. The Taiwanesesmartphone maker, which has dropped 19 percent since June 7, was also the top stock in terms of turnover.
"Part of HTC's correction last month was due to market rumors that its June sales might be down or flat month-on-month, so the result yesterday helped clear up some of the rumors," said Yuanta Securities analyst Bonnie Chang.
But Chang did not expect a significant rebound for HTC, saying longer term pessimism would remain an overhang on its second-half sales unless the company provided street-beating guidance later on.
HTC said on Sunday its consolidated sales for June were up 87.8 percent from the same month a year earlier. Growth, however, slowed from May's 116 percent.
The sales announcement came out four days earlier than scheduled, which analysts said could have been an attempt on the company to relieve the pressure on its shares.
Citi analyst Kevin Chang also said in a research report that HTC's robust June sales could serve as a good near-term share price catalyst.
He expected HTC would ship around 50 million smartphones this year and that its earnings per sharewould reach close to T$90.

Samsung drops lawsuit against Apple

Samsung drops lawsuit against Apple
According to a report from Bloomberg, Samsung has dropped its patent infringement lawsuit against Apple which had claimed that the latter had taken many of its ideas from Samsung while infringing on the Korean firm's patents. The suit was dropped on Thursday, according to Bloomberg, and company spokesman Nam Ki Yung said the action was taken in order to "streamline" the proceedings.

As we had told you, Apple had originally sued Samsung claiming that the Galaxy line of smartphones and tablets
"slavishly" copies the Apple iPhone and iPad. Samsung countersued and both firms demanded to see each others products. While Apple was allowed to look at the already released Galaxy S II and Galaxy Tab 10.1, the court denied the Korean manufacturers request to see the Apple iPhone 5 and iPad 3, both works in progress. Samsung wants to make sure that Apple is not infringing on any of its patents in the making of the two devices.

As we reported, just a couple of days ago Samsung filed a complaint against Apple with the U.S. ITC after the latter filed a suit against Samsung in Korean court. And while Apple remains one of Samsung's biggest customers, industry sources say that Apple is dropping the Korean firm as a manufacturer for its A6 chip and replacing the company with TSMC.

Samsung dropping the suit doesn't mean victory for Apple. Samsung says it will continue to fight for its patent rights through a counterclaim made against Apple in an earlier suit filed in San Jose.

Google Video tested on Nexus S, coming soon to an Android phone near you?

During Google I/O, the Mountain View based company brought out Google Video, an online movie rental service. At the time, Google Voice was made available for the Motorola XOOM with Google saying that other devices would receive the service in a matter of weeks, which would take us to the beginning of July.

And sure enough, right on time, the other day Google Video made a fleeting appearance in the Android Market and some eagle eyed observers quickly downloaded the software on to their phones even though it was not yet in working order. Despite that itsy bitsy little fact, this is obviously a good sign for Android users looking for an alternative to Netflix and Blockbuster. After all, who knows the Android platform better, and makes Android apps better than Google?

The UI has a bit of a resemblance to the YouTube client on Android phones, and seems responsive and up to the task at hand. One person with the Acer Iconia A500 updated his tablet to Honycomb 3.1 and installed the app which is running without a problem. While we haven't a clue which Android phones will get first crack at Google Video, it does seem that the video rental service is coming soon to an Android handset near you.
